Vladikavkaz opens monument to victims of terror

On April 9, an opening ceremony took place in Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia, of the monument to victims of terror. As noted by the well-known sculptor Mikhail Shemyakin, author of the monument, his work is first of all dedicated to the victims of the terror act in Beslan.

Initially, it was planned to erect the monument in Samara. But after the author visited Beslan, he, as he explained, "understood that the monument should be in North Ossetia."

"This monument is now there, where it should be. Certainly, first of all, it has to do with the tragedy in Beslan, because we see children here. It is a very complex composition saying about the threat, which frightens both Americans and Russians; there are a lot of symbols here, which can be decoded," Mr Shemyakin has explained.

The monument is established in the territory of the North-Caucasian Mining and Metallurgy College. The composition comprises a small boy and a girl who try to stop an army that is moving on them. The sculptor has explained that for him terrorists are monsters; therefore, in this particular image they are embodied in his work.
