Program to inform society about institution of ombudsman to be implemented in Armenia

"The "Promoting Human Rights and Facilitating Public Awareness of the Public Defender?s Office in Armenia" Project designed jointly with the National Assembly of Armenia and supported by the Netherlands Government will commence in January 2004," Ms. Lise Grande, UN Development Programme Resident Coordinator in Armenia, announced after she, along with Chairman of the National Assembly of Armenia Artur Bagdasarian, had singed a memorandum on the project.

According to Ms. Grande, the budget of the project is $216,850. The project provides for building public awareness of, and encouraging broad debate about key human rights issues and the importance of the institution of ombudsman. The project includes various actions aimed at strengthening this institution in Armenia. They will be carried out jointly with the National Assembly, the presidential Commission on Human Rights, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other departments.

  • Defender of Sochi gardeners' rights claims illegal prosecution

    Law enforcers have conducted a search of the home of Tatiana Polivanova, an activist, and her family members in Taganrog in connection with a fraud case with land plots of the Sochi National Park. The Polivanova's organization provided legal assistance to dozens of gardeners whose plots were seized by the court within this case.
