Makhachkala: place for monument to deceased journalists given for car park

Local officials have provided the Multifunctional Centre (MFC) with a parking area, which had been intended for a monument to deceased journalists, said Ali Kamalov, the Chairman of the Union of Journalists of Dagestan. The MFC asserts that territory for parking was transferred to them with the consent of the Ministry of the Press of the region.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 15, 2016, it became known that the model of the monument to the perished Dagestani media workers was ready. It was planned to install the monument near the House of the Press. The 16-meter-high stele "will symbolize the courage of the journalists who gave their lives for the truth," said Ali Kamalov.

The list of journalists killed in Dagestan includes Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev, a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, the deputy editor-in-chief of the “Novoe Delo”.

According to Kamalov, now the Union of Journalists "will have to look for another place to install the monument."

In his turn, the spokesman of the press service of the MFC for Provision of State and Municipal Services in the Republic of Dagestan (MFC-RD) said that the car park "will be built not in the place of the future monument, but opposite it." Also, the parking project "assumes tree planting and improvement of the adjacent area."
