Former head of Georgia's General Staff detained in Germany
In Berlin, at the request of Georgian authorities, Giorgi Kalandadze, a former head of the General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces, has been detained.
He was detained in Germany within the criminal investigation into torture and illegal imprisonment in 2012 of Elberd Koberidze, a Georgian citizen, the "Mtavari Arkhi" Georgian TV Company reported on December 19.
Georgian authorities could not arrest Kalandadze earlier, since he was not in Georgia and had lived in Ukraine for many years. He went to Germany to visit his son, who is studying there, and was arrested in Berlin.
Giorgi Kalandadze arrived in Berlin with his wife and was detained on his return from Germany to Ukraine, Lieutenant Colonel David Makishvili told the above TV Company.
During the presidency of Mikhail Saakashvili, Giorgi Kalandadze headed the General Staff of Georgia from October 8 to November 11, 2012. After the change of power in Georgia in 2014, Kalandadze went to Ukraine, the TASS reported on December 19.
