Orthodox Christmas “Alilo” procession cancelled in Georgia

This year, the traditional festive Orthodox Christmas “Alilo” procession will not take place in connection with the coronavirus pandemic, but on January 7, an action of raising Christmas donations will take place in Tbilisi, the Patriarchate of Georgian reports.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that a year ago, in January 2021, the Patriarchate of Georgia for the first time for many years cancelled the traditional Orthodox Christmas “Alilo” procession in connection with the coronavirus pandemic.

The Orthodox Christmas “Alilo” procession traditionally took place in Georgia on January 7th. During the procession, activists raise donations to be then distributed to orphanages, nursing homes, and prisons.

In connection with the coronavirus pandemic, the traditional Orthodox Christmas “Alilo” procession will also not be held this year, the Patriarchate of Georgia reports.

According to the Patriarchate, donations in the form of gifts, clothes, toys, and sweets will be collected in church and distributed after the Christmas service, the “News-Georgia” reports today.

After sorting, the donations will be distributed to orphanages, nursing homes, and penitentiary institutions, the “News-Georgia” reports.
