Court of Cassation upholds decision to liquidate HRC “Memorial”*

In a cassation appeal, lawyers of the Human Rights Centre “Memorial”* emphasized the importance of its activities, but a court in Moscow upheld the decision to liquidate the Human Rights Centre.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on December 29, 2021, the Moscow City Court pronounced a decision to liquidate the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Memorial”* at a lawsuit filed by the Prosecutor” Office, and on April 5, the court of appeal upheld the decision of the Moscow City Court.

The HRC “Memorial”* became one of the winners of the Nobel Peace Prize. The decision to award the HRC was made taking into account the NCO’s long-term activities for the benefit of human rights, and the award gives a chance for the continuation of the activities of the HRC “Memorial”* and the “International Memorial”* (International Historical Educational Charitable and Human Rights Society “Memorial”), human rights defenders emphasize.

Today, the Second Court of Cassation of General Jurisdiction has considered the appeal of the HRC “Memorial”* against the decision on its liquidation and left the decision unchanged.

Alexandra Baeva, a lawyer of the HRC “Memorial”*, recalled that the HRC was engage in the cases which other human rights defenders were afraid to deal with. For example, the HRC worked a lot in Chechnya, where the situation is still dangerous for human rights defenders, and furthermore, the HRC took on complex cases, including those on torture, kidnapping, and murder.

A public prosecutor stated that the HRC “Memorial”* prevented proper control over its activities.
