Resident of Stavropol Territory achieves compensation for illegal stay in colony

The Stavropol Territorial Court has partially satisfied the lawsuit lodged by Sergey Kalashnikov, who demanded a million roubles from the state for being kept in a colony with a serious illness for more than a year. Kalashnikov was awarded 30,000 roubles.

Sergey got into a correctional colony in February 2021; in August of the same year he filed a petition for release from punishment due to a grave illness.

The first hearing in the case was scheduled for April 2022, but has been constantly rescheduled. Finally, last August, his prison term was over, and Kalashnikov was released. Not a single hearing of his lawsuit has ever taken place, although the inmate had repeatedly applied for speeding up the consideration, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project writes.

Sergey Kalashnikov has claimed a million roubles from the state for being kept at a penal colony with a grave illness for more than a year; and the court wouldn't consider his release motion. The above Territorial Court have recognized the violation of the right to consider the claim within a reasonable time, but found the claimed amount excessive and awarded compensation of 30,000 roubles.
