Prisoner from Dagestan Omar Murtazaliev faces ban on his relatives’ visits
An administration of a penal colony in the Kurgan Region regularly places in solitary confinement Omar Murtazaliev, a native of Dagestan, as punishment. About a month ago, the convict recorded a video message in which he complained about violations of the prisoners’ rights. As a result, a visit planned for April can be prohibited, Omar Murtazaliev’s parents say.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on February 8, in Makhachkala, parents of Dagestani residents suspected of illegal possession of firearms and participation in illegal armed formations (IAFs) complained that criminal cases against the young people had been fabricated and that they had given confessions under torture. A father of Omar Murtazaliev claimed that law enforcers tortured his son, demanding from him to incriminate himself and his friends.
On January 19, Omar Murtazaliev said in his video message that prisoners in one of the penal colonies in the Kurgan Region went on a hunger strike to protest against insults to the feelings of believers and the seizure of personal belongings.
Gulya Murtazalieva, a mother of Omar Murtazaliev, complains that a visit to the son, which she had planned for the spring, could be prohibited.
The IK-2 penal colony in the Kurgan Region, where Omar Murtazaliev is serving his sentence, has a negative reputation, emphasizes Vladimir Osechkin*, a founder of the “Gulagu.net” project. In August 2021, one of the prisoners killed a penal colony employee, seriously wounded his colleague, and was killed himself.
According to the human rights defender’s information, sources confirmed that human rights were violated in the penal colony during mass searches of prisoners, but the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) is trying to hush up the situation and is putting pressure on those who reported violations of the Muslims’ rights.
“There is every reason to believe that the situation may develop similarly to that in the penal colony in Kalmykia, where in August 2022, Muslim convicts were brutally beaten and raped and a penal colony employee was killed during protests,” the human rights defender emphasized.
