Zavgaev, Doku Gapurovich

Statesman, former head of Chechen Republic, currently Ambassador of Russian Federation to Tanzania.

Born December 22, 1940, in the village of Beno-Yurt, Nadterechny County, Checheno-Ingush ASSR (Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic) in a peasant's family of many children. Chechen by nationality. In 1944, the Zavgaev family was deported to Kazakhstan and returned to Checheno-Ingushetia in 1957. From 1958-1961, Doku Zavgaev worked as a primary teacher in Nadterechny County school in Checheno-Ingushetia. From 1961 to 1966 studied in Gori Agricultural Institute, simultaneously working as a department mechanic and senior engineer of Gvardeysky sovkhoz, Nadterechny County, and later as a senior manager of inter-county agricultural mechanics unit. In 1966, upon graduation from the Institute, became the director of Znamensky sovkhoz and occupied this position until 1971. In 1971-1972, was the chairman of Nadterechny county executive committee. In 1972, became the head of Republican sovkhoz administration and occupied this position until 1975. In 1975, Doku Zavgaev became the Minister of Agriculture of Checheno-Ingush ASSR. In 1977, transferred to a Party career. Was agriculture department head ad interim of the regional committee of KPSS (Communist Party of the Soviet Union) and later secretary ad interim of Checheno-Ingush regional committee of KPSS. In 1984, graduated from the Academy of Social Science of the Central Committee of KPSS. In 1989, was elected the first secretary of Checheno-Ingush regional committee of KPSS at the alternative election. In 1990, was elected the People's Deputy of RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic) and Checheno-Ingush ASSR. Was a member of the Council of Nationalities of the Supreme Council of RSFSR. At the same time, was elected the chairman of the Supreme Council of Checheno-Ingush ASSR. Since July 1990, was a member of the Central Committee of KPSS. During the "Chechen Revolution" in September 1991, was suspended from power in the Republic. Worked in RSFSR's Supreme Council as a chairman of the Subcommittee on the North Caucasian Republics Issues. After the dissolution of the Supreme Council in the fall 1993, worked as the head of Department of Socioeconomic Issues of the RF Republics of the Territorial Department of Russian President's Administration. Actively participate din creating Russia's Chechen Assembly For Peace, Reconciliation, and Renaissance and was elected the chairman of its administration. In March 1995, was elected a member of the Chechnya's National Reconciliation Committee. Starting October 1995, was the chairman of the pro-Moscow government of Chechen Republic. In December 1995, was "elected" the head of Chechen Republic. According to official data, 95% of voters participating in the election gave their votes to D.G. Zavgaev. Carried out these functions until November 1996. Until May 1998, was a member of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation. On March 14, 1997, was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the United Republic of Tanzania, which he stays until present.

During the USSR times, was awarded the medal "For Spirited Labor" (medal "Za doblestny trud"), tow orders of the Labor Red Banner (orden Trudovogo Krasnogo Znameni), and the order "Sign of Distinction" (orden "Znak Pocheta").

Has a scientific degree of Master of Economics (kandidat ekonomicheskih nauk).

Married, three daughters.
