Kizilyurt
Town in Dagestan, republican subordination, rayon (sector) centre, 64 km north-west of Makhachkala. Located in the south of the Terek-Sulak Plain, on the Sulak River. Railway station in the Gudermes - Makhachkala line. Highway (Rostov-on-Don - Baku). Airport. Population (1992 est.) 35.3 thousand.
Formed of industrial communities of Kizilyurt, Bavtugay and Sulak in 1963. Centre of an agricultural area of irrigated cropping, wine-growing and cattle breeding (including sheep breeding). By the beginning of the 1990s, Kizilyurt had the factory of Dagelektroavtomat, a factory of phosphorus salts; production of building materials. There is the Chiryurt hydroelectric station in the environs of the town, on the Sulak river.
