Chechen authorities save power through mass power disconnections, residents assert

Residents of the city of Grozny and two districts of Chechnya – the Shali and Vedeno Districts – complain about systematic large-scale power outages. Energy officials explain them by emergencies, while residents associate them with the authorities' desire to save power resources.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 17 and 19 the Shali and Vedeno Districts twice suffered from massive power outages. In both cases, tens of thousands of residents remained without electricity for several hours, while power engineers attributed the outages to accidents at substations and transmission lines.

According to a resident of the Shali District named Markhi, her relatives living in Grozny also complain of systematic problems with electricity. Outages happen both in suburbs and in the central part of the Chechen capital.

Even a short-term power outage results in a disruption of water supply, say residents of Grozny.

The spokesman of the Chechen Ministry of Housing and Utilities said that a few weeks ago Grozny began building a thermal power plant. Since commissioning thereof in 2017, Grozny and a number of districts of the republic will be fully free of any problems.
