In Chechnya, relatives of detainees trust journalists' reports about executions

Relatives and friends of the suspected militants detained in December 2016-January 2017 trust the information released by the newspaper "Novaya Gazeta" about extrajudicial execution in Chechnya.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 9, in an article published in the "Novaya Gazeta", journalist Elena Milashina reported that at least 27 people were executed in Chechnya at night on January 26. According to the "Novaya Gazeta", those people were detained in connection with the attack on policemen in Grozny committed on December 17, 2016.

Relatives and local observers believe that all detainees could be killed. In particular, a resident of the Kurchaloi District has mentioned the name of Makhma Muskiev, a relative of well-known field commander Isa Muskiev, killed several years ago.

"We all believe that if a person has violated the law, then he should be brought to liability. However, to execute anyone without trial and investigation means no law any more, but a complete arbitrariness. How then our law enforcers can be better than militants and terrorists?" said a resident of Grozny when commenting on the situation.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
