Senator Kerimov detained in France under tax evasion case

Suleiman Kerimov, a Senator from Dagestan in the Federation Council, was detained by the French police in the city of Nice in the south of the country, the spokesman for the Russian Embassy in France has reported. Kerimov was detained under the tax evasion case, a representative of the French Prosecutor's Office has added.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 13 the French newspaper "Nice Matin" reported that Suleiman Kerimov is the actual owner of four villas on the Côte d'Azur (Azure Seashore) of France. According to the newspaper, one of them was searched in February.

According to the Russian Embassy, the Senator is in custody in one of Nice's police stations. "Late in the evening on November 20, Suleiman Kerimov was detained at the Nice Airport and taken to the police station," a source from the Embassy has reported.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has stated that French authorities were informed that Kerimov is a Senator and enjoys some immunity.

Senator Suleiman Kerimov was detained under a tax evasion case, the French Prosecutor's Office has confirmed.
