Saakashvili refuses to participate in trials in Georgia

Mikhail Saakashvili has stated he will not take part in the trials against him in Georgia and rejected his advocates, David Kakoishvili, one of them, said today.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Tbilisi City Court is considering the murder case of the banker Sandro Girgvliani. In one of the episodes of the case, Saakashvili is accused of abusing his powers; he himself treats his criminal prosecution as political.

In Georgia, Saakashvili is also accused of embezzling budgetary funds, dispersing the oppositional action in November 2007, pogrom at the "Imedi" TV Company, alienation of property from billionaire Badri Patarkatsishvili and involvement in beating up the MP Valery Gelashvili. Besides, in Ukraine, he is charged with "assisting members of criminal organizations and concealing their criminal activities."

"The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) have recently revealed facts of Georgia's political persecution, in particular, of former Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili, who is serving his prison term. Mr Saakashvili also believes that the oligarchic regimes of Ukraine and Georgia are politically persecuting him under the same scenario," the "Interfax" quotes the lawyer Kakoishvili as saying.
