IS claims responsible for attack on church in Grozny

The Caucasian branch of the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization, banned in Russia by the court, has claimed responsibility for an attempt to capture believers in the Grozny church, where seven people perished.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 19, in an attack on the Archangel Michael Church, located in the centre of Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, two policemen, four militants and one believer were killed; two other policemen and another believer were wounded. A law enforcement source has named the killed alleged militants – three residents of Chechnya and a resident of Ingushetia.

According to calculations of the "Caucasian Knot", the attack on the church in Grozny was the third attack on religious sites in Northern Caucasus committed this year. Responsibility for the two previous incidents was claimed by the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization, banned in Russia by the court. The attack on the church in Grozny was the second since the start of 2018 attack on Orthodox believers of Northern Caucasus; the first one was committed in February in Kizlyar, where five people perished.

"The Caucasian branch of the 'Islamic State'* has claimed responsibility for the attack on the Church of Archangel Michael in the capital of Chechnya," says the today's message posted on the website of the non-profit organization SITE Intelligence Group, which is monitoring the activities of terrorist groupings on the Internet.
