Five years after Akhmednabiyev's murder, inquiry resumed again

Five years ago, Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev, a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was shot dead. Over these years, investigators failed to establish the killer and the customer. The investigation was repeatedly suspended. The last, eighth decision to suspend it was made in April 2016. This June, it was resumed, but no particular results are known yet.

On July 9, 2013, Akhmednabiyev was shot dead in the village of Semender in Dagestan. He had worked for the "Caucasian Knot" for more than seven years and covered a lot of acute topics.

Tumas Misakyan, an advocate, has demanded for many times from the Dagestani Investigating Department to clarify what is going on in the case. Many of his inquiries remained unanswered.

On June 8, 2016, the advocate filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), calling the inquiry into the murder ineffective. The complaint is still pending.

According to Gadjimurad Sagitov, the editor-in-chief of the "Novoye Delo" newspaper, for a long time the inquiry into Akhmednabiyev's murder was just imitated. In his opinion, special services may know the names of alleged criminals, but they will be held accountable only if the state has its own interests therein.

At the same time, as he noted, lately, it has become safer for journalists to work in Dagestan.

In his turn, Milrad Fatullaev, the editor-in-chief of the "Derbent" News Agency, believes that although in October 2014, President Vladimir Putin promised to draw investigators' attention to the need of investigating journalists' murders in Dagestan, little has changed in the republic so far.
