Chechen residents report mass detentions of teenagers after attack on law enforcers

The young people detained by law enforcers in the Shali District of Chechnya on August 22 are relatives or friends of the young men killed in the attack on law enforcers. This was stated by local residents.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 20, law enforcers were attacked in the Shali District of Chechnya and in Grozny. Online resources affiliated with the "Islamic State" (the IS, a terrorist organization, banned in Russia by the court, – note of the "Caucasian Knot") released a video showing how the teenagers who later attacked the law enforcers swore allegiance to the IS.

On August 22, in the Shali District, law enforcers massively detained relatives and friends of the teenagers involved in the attack on policemen. The exact number of detainees is unknown, residents of the Shali District report.

"They detained dozens of young people, including 14-15-year-old teenagers. Law enforcers visited people at home and took children away with them. They did not let the parents of the detained teenagers to visit them. The detainees were being questioned until nightfall," said Arbi, a local resident.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has stated that "parents bear personal responsibility for the actions of their children."

Malika, a member of an NGO, has noted that massive detentions also took place after the attack on the Orthodox Church in Grozny.
