Tuapse residents tell about flooding of the city and nearby settlements
As a result of heavy rains, in Tuapse, the bridge over the Tsypka River was destroyed. The central part of the city turned into a swirling stream that carries away cars, townspeople report.
The press service of the regional branch of the Ministry for Emergencies (MfE) told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that today 116 millimetres of precipitations fell down within 6 hours. As a result, several populated areas were flooded at once, including Tuapse.
The downpours have forced the Tsypka River out of its banks; and the motor bridge was destroyed, said Sergey Vervein, a resident of Tuapse, an activist of the Public Popular Front.
The destroyed bridge has cut ten settlements of the northern part of the Tuapse District off the external world, among them the dwelling settlements of Shaumyan, Anastasiyevka, Bolshoye and Maloye Pseushkho, Georgievskoye and Kirpichnoye, Evgeny Vitishko, an environmentalist and a Tuapse resident, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
"The rain started at 8 a.m.; and by its intensity it was immediately clear that everything would be flooded," Mr Vitishko said. According to his story, central streets of Tuapse turned into swirling streams.
"Cars are carried away by stream; there are people in them. The MfE is working; they are evacuating people, but, in my opinion, it won't do without victims," said Vitishko.
"All these are consequences of wrong general planning: there are either no shower drains at all, or they are outside the requirements. The city is constantly flooded," the environmentalist has concluded.
