In 2017, after two calm years, people again fell victim to armed conflict in North Ossetia

In 2017, in North Ossetia, nine people fell victim to the ongoing armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. Meanwhile, in 2016 and 2015, no victims to the armed conflict were registered in the republic, and no increase in the number of victims was registered over the past seven years. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

As a rule, the main indicator of the intensity of an armed conflict is the number of victims killed and wounded people during armed clashes and armed incidents, as well as bombings and terror acts. However, the very number of such cases is no less important and informative.

Armed incidents

January-December 2017

In 2017, in North Ossetia, four armed incidents were registered, to which nine people fell victim, including five killed and four wounded.

Four suspected militants and a law enforcer were killed, while three other law enforcers and a civilian were wounded.

The "Caucasian Knot" notes: the statistics on members of the armed underground mentions those who were declared as such by the law enforcement bodies.

January-December 2016

In 2016, no armed incidents were registered in the territory of North Ossetia.

Thus, it is possible to draw a conclusion about destabilization of the situation in the republic and an increase in the number of armed incidents in the region in 2017 compared with the previous year, in which no similar incidents were registered.

Bombings and terror acts

January-December 2017

In 2017, no bombings or terror acts were registered in North Ossetia.

January-December 2016

In 2016, no bombings or terror acts were registered in the region.

Thus, in 2017, as compared to 2016, the number of bombings or terror acts in the republic did not change.

Results of the year: the situation in the region has destabilized for the first time in seven years.

Due to the fact that in 2017, in North Ossetia, nine people fell victim to the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus and over the past two years, no victims at all were registered in the region, it is possible to talk about the tense situation in the republic. Meanwhile, given that over the past seven years, in the territory of North Ossetia, there has been an annual tendency to stabilization of the situation both in the number of victims and in the number of incidents, a noticeable increase in those indicators by late 2017 indicates destabilization in the region.

No registered incidents and victims for 2016 and 2015 compared with 2014 showed a tendency towards a significant stabilization of the situation. In 2014, one person was killed in the armed conflict. In 2013, at least three persons were killed in the armed conflict, including a civilian and two suspected members of the armed underground. In 2012, in North Ossetia, 14 people fell victim to the armed conflict. Of them, seven were killed and seven others were wounded. In 2011, 14 victims were registered. Of them, four were killed and ten others were wounded. In 2010, 195 people fell victim to the armed conflict. Of them, 24 were killed and 171 others were wounded.

It should be realized that the provided statistics cannot reflect with the 100 percent accuracy the number of victims for each of the categories highlighted in the review. Not all information is included in the news reports. It is not always possible to check the reliability of the statements voiced by the law enforcement bodies and to reveal involvement of members of the armed underground in certain crimes.
