Nalchik: over 300 gather to commemorate Caucasian War victims
A concert of old Adyg songs was held at the monument to the victims of the Caucasian War "The Tree of Life" in Nalchik; after which 101 candles were lit.
The Caucasian War, which lasted from 1763 to 1864, put the Adyg nations on the verge of complete extinction. After the war and the mass deportation of Adygs (Circassians) to the Ottoman Empire, just over 50,000 of them remained in their homeland.
In the evening on May 20, a concert of old Adyg songs took place in Nalchik near the monument to the Adygs-victims of the Caucasian War "The Tree of Life", the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports from the venue.
The concert ended at 8 p.m. Moscow time with lighting of 101 candles installed at "The Tree of Life", symbolizing 101 years – the time that the Caucasian War lasted.
Over 300 residents of Nalchik took part in the event. The participants interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" have noted that the tragedy of the Caucasian War will never be forgotten by Adygs (Circassians).
Aslan Beshto, the chairman of the "Kabardian Congress" Movement, has noted in his comment on the memorable date that it will become more and more relevant "until the problem of the divided Circassian nation is resolved."
