Azerbaijani journalist Shamistan Khaziev arrested for 30 days
A Baku court has found the oppositionist, Shamistan Khaziev, guilty of "petty hooliganism"; however, his colleagues and activists have associated his arrest with his oppositional views.
Khaziev, a 23-year-old employee of the "ann.az" website, was detained on October 31. According to his story, his arrest was caused by his publication on the Facebook.
"Shamistan was offered to sign his refusal from oppositional views and promised to let him go, but he refused. After that, they drew up a protocol on 'petty hooliganism'," a source from the above website said, noting that "Khaziev is a very well-brought up, intelligent young man; and the charge of petty hooliganism against him is simply ridiculous."
Elshan Gasanov, the coordinator of the Centre for Monitoring Political Prisoners, has noted that Khaziev had been earlier detained more than once during protest actions.
"In January, he was fined by 200 manats (about USD 117). Recently, he wrote emotional posts criticizing the authorities," Mr Gasanov has added.
