Azerbaijani court cuts journalist Mamedov's conditional imprisonment

Anar Mamedov, the editor-in-chief of the "Criminal.az" website, who had asked the Supreme Court (SC) of Azerbaijan to acquit him, has criticized the decision to re-qualify the charge against him and cut his conditional sentence by three months.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 18, 2019, Anar Mamedov was sentenced to 5.5 years of conditional impisonment. The court found him guilty of public appeals against the state, abuse of power and forgery. Arlem Desir, the OSCE's Representative for Media Freedom, has called to review the Mamedov's case.

"I have noted that I had been convicted on falsified charges based on the testimonies of three women who were allegedly 'shocked' after reading my articles about the events in Ganja," Mamedov has narrated, adding that he would file a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

Let us remind you that on January 7, the court began considering a new case against Mamedov. This time, a lawsuit was filed by Malakhat Gurbanova, the owner of "Lombard N:1" Company, who accuses the journalist of slander.
