Spouse of "Azel.tv" director demands to set him free
Sevindj Sadygova held a protest action in front of the building of the Chief Directorate for Combating Corruption of Azerbaijan. The woman demanded to release from arrest her husband Afghan Sadygov, the director of the "Azel.tv" website.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that according to the wife of Afghan Sadygov, on May 13, he was detained, and a search was carried out in their apartment. The General Prosecutor's Office of Azerbaijan reported that Afghan Sadygov was charged with extortion of money and arrested for four months. The spouse of Afghan Sadygov believes that her husband is being prosecuted for his journalistic activities and speaking on social networks.
According to Sevindj Sadygova, the "falsification of the criminal case" against her husband is being proved by the fact that the man charged together with her husband was left at large.
On June 19, Sevindj Sadygova already held a protest action in front of the Prosecutor's Office. According to the woman, after the arrest of her husband, she "was not allowed to visit him or hold phone conversations with him."
Earlier, the New York-based "Committee to Protect Journalists" (CPJ) has called on the Azerbaijan's authorities to release Afghan Sadygov.
According to investigators, Afghan Sadygov was extorting a bribe from an official for not making public a material allegedly incriminating the official. However, an advocate of the "Azel.tv" director claimed that the charge of extortion was filed "in retaliation for an article about officials published by Afghan Sadygov."
