Ramzan Kadyrov breaks his own election record

According to the election commission, Ramzan Kadyrov won 99.7% of the votes in the elections for the leader of Chechnya, while in 2016, his result was 97%.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Ramzan Kadyrov was registered as a candidate for the post of the leader of Chechnya as a nominee of the “Edinaya Rossiya” (United Russia) Party. His rivals were Khalid Nakaev, a member of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF), and Isa Khadjimuradov from the “Spravedlivaya Rossiya-Patriots-For Truth” Party. According to experts, both candidates are formal, and there is no talk about the struggle for the post of the leader of the republic.

Ramzan Kadyrov has been heading the republic for over 14 years. In 2016, he was directly elected for his third term: according to the official information, he was supported by 97% of voters.

On the eve of the elections, there was no campaigning for candidates on Chechen TV, said Ruslan Kutaev, the president of the Assembly of Caucasian Nations.

“What kind of campaigning may take place? Everyone understands that Ramzan Kadyrov is the only candidate,” said political analyst Magomed Khamidov.

On May 20, Ramzan Kadyrov announced that he would not participate in the elections if at least “a few percent of the population” opposed his candidacy. The statement of the leader of Chechnya about his willingness to abandon the new term was ritual, political analysts noted.
