Georgian President Zurabishvili pardons 14 convicts
Out of the fourteen prisoners pardoned by Salome Zurabishvili, President of Georgia, on the eve of the New Year holidays, nine have got the opportunity to leave prison today, while the terms of punishment have been mitigated for the other convicts.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Salome Zurabishvili repeatedly timed decisions on pardoning convicts for the holidays. So, on April 7, 2020, the President of Georgia pardoned nine women with minor children on the occasion of the holiday of Annunciation. On January 6 of the same year, Salome Zurabishvili pardoned five persons on the occasion of Christmas. Meanwhile, hundreds of convicts waited for the amnesty, human rights defenders reproached the President of Georgia.
Salome Zurabishvili, a native and former citizen of France, had been serving as a diplomat at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) for about 30 years. She became the President of Georgia in November 2018.
