After border violation, US citizen expelled from South Ossetia

South-Ossetian law enforcers have handed Frank Yanez, a US citizen, who was detained for violating the border, over to Georgia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 20, the State Security Service (SSS) of Georgia reported that "illegal borderization" had been carried out near the villages of Okona and Gremiskhevi on the demarcation line with South Ossetia. Since 2011, the "borderization" has affected about 40 villages in the Gori and Karelian Municipalities, where almost 70 kilometres of wire fences have been installed.

The restrictions on crossing the Georgia's borders with Abkhazia and South Ossetia violate the rights of residents of border villages; they cannot run their farming and risk being detained for crossing the border, the report of the human rights organization the Amnesty International has stated.

Frank Yanez, a US citizen, has violated the border of South Ossetia, the press service of the Committee for State Security (known as the KGB) of South Ossetia has informed. According to the KGB, "this is the second case lately" when a US citizen "was not aware of the existence of the South-Ossetian-Georgian state border and committed an illegal crossing thereof."
