ECtHR awards compensation to son of murdered journalist Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg recognized a violation of the right to life and obliged Russia to pay compensation of 26,000 euros to relatives of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev, a “Caucasian Knot” correspondent in Dagestan, who was shot dead in 2013.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev was shot dead near his house in the village of Semender in Dagestan. The journalist had been working for the “Caucasian Knot” as a correspondent for more than seven years. Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev was highlighting sensitive topics in his articles. A complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) about an ineffective investigation was sent in 2016. In October 2021, the ECtHR communicated the complaints filed by the relatives of murdered journalists Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev and Khadjimurad Kamalov and combined their cases into one.

In September 2009, the name of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev appeared in leaflets in which anonymous people promised to take revenge for policemen and civilians. Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev requested the law enforcement bodies to provide him with protection, and in May 2012, the journalists complained about threats against him.

Lawyers representing the interests of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev’s son believe that investigators failed their operational work in the very first days after the crime.
