Journalists treat their colleague Amaglobeli’s arrest as attempt to intimidate independent media
An action in front of the “Vivamed” Clinic, where Mziya Amaglobeli, the founder of the “Batumelebi” and “Netgazeti” outlets, is kept for treatment, was organized by the journalists, who treat their colleague’s arrest as an attempt to harass independent media.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Amaglobeli's advocates had filed a petition with the court demanding to change her freedom restriction measure and release her from custody. Mziya continues her hunger strike at the clinic. On February 14, the court ruled to leave her in custody.
Protesters in Tbilisi assert that authorities had arrested Amaglobeli aiming to intimidate independent media. The administrative case against her was initiated in violation of the law, the "Young Lawyers’ Association of Georgia" has stated. In particular, the hearing on the case is scheduled for February 17, but neither Amaglobeli nor her advocates were informed about this.
Marina Chentsova, an editor of the NGO “International Journalists’ Network”, said that an article about Amaglobeli is being prepared. Shirin Ebadi, a Nobel Peace and Human Rights Laureate, has spread a letter in Amaglobeli’s support.
After Amaglobeli's arrest, Georgia has faced repeated protests against her criminal prosecution. More than 300 Georgian journalists have called her a prisoner of conscience.
