Russian citizen expelled from Abkhazia due to video clip

During his visit to Sukhum, Otari Kobakhidze, a Russian citizen, filmed a video clip, in which he stated that he had returned to his homeland after 33 years. This caused a negative reaction in the Abkhaz society, after which special services detained the man and escorted him out of the country.

Employees of the State Security Service (SSS) of Abkhazia have expelled Otari Kobakhidze, a Russian citizen, from Abkhazia; he will also be denied entry there in the future.

Kobakhidze came to Sukhum with his daughter, where he filmed a video clip, in which he stated that he had returned to his homeland after 33 years. According to the SSS’ press service, the clip triggered a wide public outcry, the SSS reported on June 2.

In the video clip, which was posted on the TikTok, Kobakhidze approached his former home, from which only the walls and a balcony remained. "I returned to my homeland after 33 years. It was my dream. The house is completely destroyed," reads the caption superimposed on the video.

According to the Abkhazian SSS, such videos offend patriotic feelings of citizens of Abkhazia. Besides, it is noted that it was necessary to avoid conflict situations and further heating of passions in the society; therefore, Kobakhidze was detained in the Gagra District and escorted outside Abkhazia.

The SSS has also posted a video with Kobakhidze’s apologies. He said that he apologized for filming the video clip and, "without thinking, posting it on the Internet." "Forgive me, Abkhaz people, for what has happened," the man said, putting his hand to his heart.
