In Sochi, activists call editor of "Mestnaya" newspaper one of main critics of authorities

In Sochi, Oleg Rubezhansky, an editor of the newspaper "Mestnaya" (Local), has died of heart failure at the age of 57 after a long illness. The newspaper's activities have been stopped. Activists of the Sochi community call Oleg Rubezhansky one of the main critics of the authorities.

Oleg Rubezhansky died on May 4, and he was buried at the Baranovskoe cemetery in Sochi.

The funeral took place without publicity. "His daughter has said that she did not want the publicity and informed me later, only three days after his death," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Yuri Maryan, the leader of the anti-corruption coalition of Sochi, a friend and a colleague of Oleg Rubezhansky.

According to Yuri Maryan, after the death of Oleg Rubezhansky, the local media will not be able to replace his activity in Sochi.

"I want to say that it is a huge loss for civil society of Sochi. Oleg Rubezhansky was a talented person. He tried to rouse public opinion. Crowds of people visited him for help and publicity and told him their stories," Yuri Maryan notes.
