Residents of Dagestan criticize Muftiate for dress code recommendations for tourists

The Muftiate of Dagestan has urged those who come to the republic to respect local "traditions and foundations" with their behaviour and appearance. The clergy cannot dictate to the guests of the region how to dress, residents of the republic and social network users believe.

Shamil Alikhanov, the head of the Muftiate of Dagestan, has called on the residents and guests of the republic "to bring their appearance in line with the ideas of what should be accepted in the region."

Svetlana Anokhina, a journalist, was outraged on the Facebook by the fact that the Muftiate was in favour of introducing a dress code in the republic, but failed to express a clear position on the issues that were significant for residents of Dagestan.

Elmira Gasanova, a resident of Makhachkala, treats the Muftiate's to observe the dress code as inappropriate. "In Makhachkala, no one goes naked," she said.

The Muftiate's position undermines tourism development plans, Magomed Osmanov believes.

The "Caucasian Knot" reported that in 2019, the Chechen Ministry for Tourism issued a memo describing the dress code for tourists: women were advised to dress as modestly as possible; and men were advised to give up shorts and sleeveless T-shirts.
