Journalist Marshenkulova arrested in absentia on charges of justifying terrorism

In Moscow, a court granted an investigators’ request to arrest in absentia Zalina Marshenkulova, a journalist from Kabardino-Balkaria, who was wanted on charges of justifying terrorism.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that a criminal case was instituted because of entries on Zalina Marshenkulova’s Telegram channel. On April 17, it became known that the journalist was put on the wanted list.

Zalina Marshenkulova herself, who lives in Germany, considers the accusation absurd and associates it with her political position. The criminal case instituted against the journalist is not related to her participation in defending women’s rights in Kabardino-Balkaria, human rights defenders suggest.

Let us remind you some sources claim that Zalina Marshenkulova is being persecuted for her statements about the death of blogger Vladlen Tatarsky, who perished in an explosion in a cafe in Saint Petersburg on April 2, 2023. However, according to the investigators’ version, Zalina Marshenkulova posted “a number of publications on the justification of terrorism” on Telegram “no later than March 3, 2023,” a month before the Vladlen Tatarsky’s death.
