Analysts: European sanctions seem to be formality for Kadyrov Foundation

Fundraising for the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation is carried out mainly in Russia and mainly in cash, so sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU) are not able to significantly affect the activities of the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation, analysts note.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on June 24, the European Union included Aimani Kadyrova, a mother of the leader of Chechnya, and the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation headed by her on the EU sanctions list.

A number of operations will become more complicated for the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation because of the EU sanctions, believes Alexander Karavaev, a researcher at the Caspian Institute for Strategic Studies. “Banking sanctions can be bypassed through intermediaries, but the cost of transactions will increase by the amount of the commission,” Alexander Karavaev explained.

Furthermore, the expert suggests there may be difficulties for the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation with public fundraising in Europe. “The presence of the EU sanctions can even be interpreted as a positive fact, because it demonstrates confrontation with the Western world,” the researcher noted.

As for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and Palestine, the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation will face no problems there. “Transactions may be effected through Jordan or other Arab countries with which the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation’s managers succeeded to established working relations,” Alexander Karavaev noted.

Svetlana Gannushkina*, the chair of the “Civic Assistance Committee”*, doubts that the EU sanctions are important for the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation from a financial point of view.

Ruslan Kutaev, the president of the Assembly of Caucasian Nations, also does not think that any sanctions will interfere with the activities of the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation, since the ban on transactions in the EU is already in effect for all Russian citizens.

“The Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation will rather not be able to carry out humanitarian activities on the territory of the European Union,” Ruslan Kutaev emphasized.

In his Telegram channel, Ramzan Kadyrov notes that the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation “helps African countries” and “provided support to Turkey, which suffered from the earthquake, and to refugees of Syria, Bangladesh, and Palestine.”
