Human rights defenders support Ismail Nalgiev

On May 9, human rights organizations called on to prevent violations of the rights of Ingush activist Ismail Nalgiev, who was detained at the Minsk airport. The human rights defenders also mentioned the possibility of torture in Ingushetia. Ismail Nalgiev promised to go on a hunger strike if extradited to Russia, his advocate reported.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 8, Ismail Nalgiev, the coordinator of the NGO "Choice of Ingushetia", was detained at the Minsk airport, from where he planned to fly to the Czech Republic. According to Ingush activists, his search was initiated by Ingushetia.

"Ismail Nalgiev, the head of the NGO 'Choice of Ingushetia', is well known as an active participant of the protests against the border agreement between Chechnya and Ingushetia. We associate the activist's detention with his participation in the protests on the territory of Ingushetia," reported the NGO "Legal Initiative" in its statement posted on the website on May 9.

According to the NGO's statement, "there is a risk that Ismail Nalgiev will be transferred to the Ingush authorities without following the procedure established by the law." The human rights defenders also note there is a "threat of torture in Ingushetia."
