Rights activists recognize Zarema Musaeva as political prisoner

The human rights project "Support for Political Prisoners" has announced Zarema Musaeva to be a political prisoner; the woman is being tried in Chechnya under the articles of an assault on a law enforcer and a fraud.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 16, the judge rejected the advocates' petition to change the territorial jurisdiction of Musaeva's case.

Zarema Musaeva, the wife of the former Russian federal judge, Saidi Yangulbaev, was abducted and taken away from Nizhny Novgorod to Grozny on January 20, 2022. On February 1, she was accused of assaulting a law enforcer.

According to international criteria, Zarema Musaeva is a political prisoner, the project "Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial"* has stated on its Telegram channel. Human rights defenders demanded Musaeva's immediate release and "ensuring a fair investigation into the charges against her."

"In fact, Musaeva was taken hostage because her sons criticize Ramzan Kadyrov's regime; and her husband refuses to condemn their activities," the above human rights project has stated.

"The 53-year-old diabetic woman was not allowed to get dressed or take medications with her," the project has stated in its publication.
