Contract soldier from Maikop sentenced for leaving his military unit without permission

Contract soldier Vladimir Marchenko went twice absent from his military unit without leave, during one of which he acquired drugs. A court in Maikop sentenced Vladimir Marchenko to 7.5 years of imprisonment for the above offence. A court in Rostov-on-Don considered the appeal and upheld the verdict.

The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don considered a Vladimir Marchenko’s complaint against the verdict of the court, which found him guilty under two articles on leaving a military unit and an article on purchasing drugs, the “Kavkaz.Realii”* reports.

It is noted that Vladimir Marchenko, serving in the army under a contract, decided to have a rest and did not appear at his military unit. At the same time, he acquired “a significant volume of narcotic drugs without the purpose of sale.” The man stored the drugs in his car, where they were found by the police. After that, Vladimir Marchenko, “wanting to avoid criminal liability,” again did not appear at his military unit. Later, the man voluntarily came to the military investigating department in Armavir.

The court took into account that Vladimir Marchenko was wounded while performing special tasks. He was sentenced to seven years and six months of imprisonment. The court of appeal found the punishment fair and upheld it.

Tightening of the Russian legislation after the announcement of mobilization resulted in more severe sentences for absence from a military unit or desertion, human rights defenders pointed out.
