Court leaves journalist Nadezhda Kevorkova under arrest

The Moscow City Court (MCC) has refused to satisfy the defence's protest against the arrest of the journalist, Nadezhda Kevorkova, the court's press service has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 7, 2024, the Basmanny Court of Moscow arrested the 65-year-old Kevorkova, accused of justifying terrorism, for two months. On June 18, the same court extended her arrest until August 6. Her defence achieved inclusion into the case files of the statements made by the Russian President about the possibility of building relations with the Taliban* government and removing the movement from the list of those banned in Russia, the advocate has stated.

The text by Orkhan Djemal, the posting of which became the reason for Kevorkova's conviction, had not been declared illegal earlier. In his 2010 article about the attack on Nalchik, Djemal talked about authorities' blunders that had sparked discontent among Muslims.

The arguments that Kevorkova's post in her Telegram channel was accessible to a wide audience have nothing to do with reality, the advocate has emphasized. Kevorkova's posts about the events in Nalchik in 2005 concerned the torture to which detainees were subjected and irritated law enforcers, while "she did not support terror in any form," Maxim Shevchenko, a journalist and her ex-husband, has stated.

*By the Russian Supreme Court the movement has been recognized to be a terrorist organization.

  • Case on sabotage of Novosibirsk teenagers resembles similar cases in Southern Russia

Parents of the teenagers detained in Novosibirsk for setting fire to relay cabinets, a cell phone station, and an SU-24 aircraft believe that the case has been falsified. Investigators instituted similar cases in Southern Russia, although the cases contain signs of provocations from law enforcers, and the person who ordered the crimes remains unidentified, a lawyer notes.

  • Resident of North Ossetia treats compensation for beating up by law enforcer as insufficient

Soslan Dzidakhanov disagrees with the amount of compensation for his suffered moral harm that the Ardonsky Court awarded him for being beaten up by a law enforcer. In the Russian judicial practice, it is customary to decrease the compensation amount; and the resonance from Tskaev's case has partially contributed to a decrease in the number of tortures in the republic, Vladimir Tskaev's widow and his advocate have stressed.
