Protest action against suppression of rights and freedoms in Azerbaijan held in Paris
On July 22, the Day of National Press of Azerbaijan, a protest action against suppression of rights and freedoms in this country was held in Paris in front of Azerbaijani embassy. The action was organized by the "Reporters without Borders", an international organization in defence of journalists, with participation of a group of young Azerbaijanis.
One of the organizers was Agil Khalil, a correspondent of the newspaper "Azadlyg" (Freedom), who received political asylum in France.
As reported by Mr Khalil to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by telephone, the participants of the action scanned slogans in support of convicted journalists in Azerbaijan and demanded their immediate release. They held their portraits and portraits of bloggers Adnan Gadjizade and Emin Milli arrested two weeks ago.
At the end of the action, Khalil handed a petition over to the embassy representative with a demand to put an end to suppression of the freedom of speech and release journalists and bloggers. The journalist has noted that the action was supported by the workers of various media who live in the House of Journalists in Paris and a group of French citizens of Azerbaijani origin.
