Slavyansk-na-Kubani
City in Krasnodar kray(region), kray subordination, rayon (sector) centre, 130 km west of Krasnodar. Located in the Kuban-Priazov Lowlands, on the Protoka River (an arm of the Kuban). Railway station (Protoka) in the Timashevskaya - Crimean line. A motor road junction (Temryuk - Krasnodar, etc.). A river wharf. Airport. Population (1992 est.) 59.2 thousand, (1959 est.) 31 thousand, (1970 est.) 50 thousand, (1979 est.) 54 thousand.
Known since the 12th century as a settlement of the Circassians (the Ukrainians). In 1865, the stanitsa (Cossack village) of Slavyanskaya was founded; since 1897, it was the centre of the Temryuk sector of Kuban oblast (province). The stanitsa was inhabited by 17.7 thousand people, and there were 3 churches and 80 commercial and industrial establishments, including 1 steam and 21 wind mills, a winery, 2 creameries; there was trade in grain , 2 schools, a post and telegraph office, an army hospital. In 1928, an elevator (at present, a feed factory); in 1930, the Protoka machine and tractor station (at present, a repair and engineering works); in 1934, a jamming factory (at present, a cannery) were built. Present Slavyansk-na-Kubani has (in addition to the above-mentioned) food industry (a winery, a creamery and cheese dairy, a rice factory; a poultry farm and a food complex); a tare and an iodine factories; a clothes factory; production of building materials; oil and gas production. Museum of Local Lore. The city has preserved the district built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. New microdistricts have been built.
