Svetlograd
Centre of Petrovskoye rayon (sector) of Stavropol kray (region), 85 km north-east of Stavropol. Located in Ciscaucasia, on the Stavropol Upland, on the Kalaus River (an inflow of the Vostochny Manych). Junction of the Kavkazskaya - Elista railway line (68 km to the town of Blagodatny) and motor roads. Population (1992 est.) 38.3 thousand, (1979 est.) 33.9 thousand.
Until 1965, it was known as the village of Petrovskoye, then the city of Svetlograd. Present Svetlograd has a small-ware weaving mill; a meat-processing plant, a battery farm, a food complex; a butter-and-cheese factory and a winery; production of building materials; railway transport. Agricultural centre. A branch of the Stavropol Museum of Local Lore.
