Nevinnomyssk

City in Stavropol kray (region), kray subordination, 62 km south of Stavropol. Located in Ciscaucasia, in the Stavropol Upland, on the banks of the Kuban River, at its confluence with the Bolshoy Zelenchuk River. Nevinnomyssk is the starting point of the Nevinnomyssk Canal, which provides water from the Kuban River into the Yegorlyk River. Railway junction (the station of Nevinnomysskaya in the Armavir - Prokhladnaya line, a starting point of a branch to the station of Ust-Dzhegutinskaya). Motorway (Rostov-on-Don - Mineralny Vody). Population (1992 est.) 124.9 thousand, (1959 est.) 40 thousand, (1970 est.) 85 thousand, (1979 est.) 104.5 thousand.

Founded in 1825 as a stanitsa (Cossack village) near a small fortification. Town since 1939. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, it was occupied by Nazi troops on August 7, 1942; liberated on January 20, 1943. After the war, it developed as the largest centre of chemical industry. By the beginning of the 1990s, Nevinnomyssk had PO Azot; electrical industry; a boiler and engineering plant; a worsted spinning factory, a primary wool treatment factory; food-processing industry; an oil-extraction plant, a dairy factory; a mill house, a poultry-processing plant, etc.

There is a branch of Stavropol Polytechnic Institute in Nevinnomyssk.
