HRC "Memorial": verdict on "Chitigov's case" in Ingushetia controversial

Human rights defenders, who watched the progress of the trial, believe that the verdict of the Karabulak Court on the case against Nazir Guliev and Ilyas Nalgiev, former staff members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Ingushetia, accused of torture, is indecisive and inconsistent and it causes perplexity.

The Karabulak trial that lasted more than a year and was extremely difficult, is remarkable by the fact that it was the first case in Northern Caucasus, when torture at police stations became a subject of judicial proceedings and the defendant was not only found guilty, but he was sentenced to real and serious term of imprisonment. This was reported by a message of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial", received by the edition of the "Caucasian Knot".

Meanwhile, the human rights organization treats the very verdict as controversial.

"Guliev and Nalgiev formed 'a tandem', well known in the republic, and, therefore, conviction of one and acquittal of the other looks like an obvious nonsense and suggests extraneous influence on the Court," the HRC "Memorial" has stated.
