Prosecutors have inspected the HRC "Memorial"

Today, law enforcement officers came to inspect the office of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial", said Alexander Cherkasov the chairman of the HRC.

"Both the International and Moscow 'Memorial' are inspected. Today, they began inspecting the HRC. They've presented a prescription on what documents they want to examine; however, they refused to answer our questions as to why and on what basis they requested the documents. Now they left, promising to come back," Mr Cherkasov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The prosecutors demand that they shall be provided with the requested documents no later than two days.

According to Cherkasov, the inspection has to do with the law "On Non-Profit Organizations". "They are eager to put us on the list of Foreign Agents," said the rights defender.

On July 13, 2012, the State Duma passed a law that introduced the status of a "Foreign Agent" for foreign-funded non-profit organizations. The law was criticized by human rights activists.
