Lagan
Rayon (sector) centre in Kalmykia, 310 km south-east of Elista. Located on the Caspian Coastal Plain, 9 km of the Caspian Sea, 42 km from the railway station of Ulan-Holl in the Astrakhan - Gudermes line. Population (1992 est.) 16.3 thousand, (1979 est.) 14.3 thousand.
Town since 1963. By the beginning of the 1990s, Lagan had a machine works; a meat-packing plant; a fish factory, one of the largest in the Volga -Caspian fishing grounds; enterprises servicing the fishing fleet and trucks . Oil-and-gas production department. The Lagansky beast-breeding state farm (sovkhoz) (cultivation of small expensive-fur animals). The Kaspiets and the Krasny moryak fishing collective farms.
