Terror acts committed by suicide bombers in the territory of the Russian Federation

According to calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot", starting from 2000, the territory of Russia saw 81 terror acts, involving 124 suicide bombers with at least 52 female suicide bombers among them. The terror acts killed 1216 persons and wounded more than 3263 persons.

2013

On December 30, in Volgograd, an explosion was triggered in a trolleybus. According to various sources, the explosion, which is already recognized as a terror act, hurt from 15 to 23 people.

On December 29, a blast occurred at the railway station in Volgograd. 18 people were killed and at least 40 were injured. A criminal case was opened after the explosion under Articles 205 (terror act) and 222 (illegal circulation of weapons) of the Russian Criminal Code.

On December 27, a car was blown up near the GIBDD (traffic police) building, located in Circassian Highway in Pyatigorsk. According to the Russian MIA, three occasional bystanders were killed.

On October 21 (information that the explosion was triggered by a suicide bomber, later was disproved - note of the "Caucasian Knot"), in Volgograd, in Lazorevaya Street, in a LiAZ bus that was on the route "State University-'Yubileiny' Cinema", a female suicide bomber triggered an explosive device. As a result of the explosion, seven persons, including the female suicide bomber herself, were killed, and 32 persons were brought to city hospitals. According to the preliminary information, reported by investigators, the suicide bombing in the bus was committed by Naida Asiyalova, a 30-year-old native of Dagestan. According to the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF), not long before that she entered Islam and she was the wife of one of the leaders of illegal armed formations (IAFs).

On September 23, in the village of Khuchni, the centre of the Tabasaran District of Dagestan, an explosion occurred not far from the building of the ROVD (District Interior Division). The explosion was classified as a terror act; and investigators found that it had been committed by a suicide bomber. As a result of the explosion, a policeman and a staff member of the Federal Migration Service (FMS) were killed. According to the Dagestani Prosecutor's Office, 14 policemen and two civilians were hospitalized with wounds.

On September 16, in Chechnya, a suicide bomber committed a terror act near the building of the Sunzha ROVD in the village of Sernovodskaya. As a result, three policemen were killed, and four others were wounded. On the same day, in Ingushetia, in the village of Nesterovskaya, a car exploded in a shootout. As a result, one policeman was killed, and three others were wounded. Prior to the incident, a man with an explosive device was detained near the Sunzha ROVD of Ingushetia. He was identified as a certain Sulambek Machukaev, a resident of Chechnya. According to the National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC), he intended to commit a terror act similar to the one that occurred in Sernovodskaya.

On May 25, in the centre of Makhachkala, in Gamzatov Avenue, near the building of the Dagestani MIA, a female suicide bomber committed a terror act. The power of her IED made about 500 grams of TNT (trotyl) equivalent. The suicide bomber was identified as the 25-year-old Madina Alieva. She was the common-law wife of Aliev and Djapaev, two militants, who had been eliminated earlier. According to the Dagestani MIA, as a result of the explosion in Makhachkala, 15 persons were wounded, including five policemen. Later, a woman wounded by the explosion, died in hospital. According to the edition named "Life News", in total, 18 persons suffered from the explosion, seven of them are Dagestani policemen. Fifteen victims were hospitalized.

On May 17,  in the village of Ordzhonikidzevskaya of the Sunzha District of Ingushetia, when law enforcers inspected one of the households, a suspected IAF member blew himself up with a grenade. He was wearing a suicide belt, said Djabrail Shaukhalov, the head of the press service of the Ingush MIA. According to the ICRF, seven law enforcers were wounded by the explosion. Later, it was announced that the suicide bombing was committed by Said-Khusein Atnazov, a resident of Chechnya, born in 1981. Akhmed Khashiev, the owner of the house, where Atnazov committed a suicide bombing, was detained; and a criminal case was instituted against him under the article of "organization of an IAF or involvement therein" of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

On February 14, in Khasavyurt (Dagestan), a powerful explosion occurred at a checkpoint of the road-and-patrol service (known as DPS), when policemen inspected a Lada Priora car stopped by them. According to the ICRF, the driver triggered an explosive device with the power of 100-120 kg of TNT equivalent. As a result, three law enforcers – Ensign Sergey Solodyagin, Senior Sergeant Alexander Onkin and Senior Sergeant Denis Dmitriev – were killed. Six others were wounded, and one disappeared. Later, one of the wounded law enforcers died in hospital; and the body of the disappeared policeman was found. Thus, the number of victims reached 10 persons, including five casualties and five wounded policemen. The ICRF classified the incident as a terror act. The criminal, who had committed the terror act, was also killed. The explosion formed a crater with a diameter of 4 meters and depth of 1.5 meters. The building of the DPS checkpoint and service cars were damaged.

2012

On October 23, at the Chermen checkpoint on North Ossertia and Ingushetia border, a Lada car was blown up. According to the investigators, the explosive device was activated by a suicide bomber. One policeman was killed and four other policemen were injured. The checkpoint building was totally destroyed by the explosion.

On August 28, a suicide bomber Aminat Kurbanova blew herself up in the house of Sufi Sheikh Said-Afandi Al-Chirkavi in the village of Chirkei of the Buinaksk District. The explosion killed seven persons, including Sheikh Said-Afandi Al-Chirkavi, at least three persons were wounded.

On August 19, in Malgobek (Ingushetia), during the funeral of the district policeman killed a day before, an explosion was triggered by a suicide bomber. As a result, eight people, including the bomber, were killed and 15 more were wounded.

On August 6, in Baisangurov Street in Grozny, at the entrance to the store "Voentorg", two explosions triggered by suicide bombers occurred. The explosions killed four law enforcers, four more persons, among them one local resident, were injured. Investigators found fragments of 'shahid belt' at the place of explosions.

On July 27, during the special operation in the village of Alburikent near Makhachkala, where in a private house the staff members of the FSB Department and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) blocked the suspected militants, one of the women committed a suicide bombing. During the armed clash, according to the National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC), six militants were killed. Saidat Yusupova, who was in the house, blocked by power agents, tried to approach the law enforcement agents under the pretence of willingness to surrender. At that time, a self-explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED), attached to her body, occurred, as a result, the woman got fatal injuries.

On May 3, in Makhachkala, 2 explosions were committed at the police check point "Alaska-30". The first explosion occurred at about 10:20 p.m. Moscow time, the second one at about 10:40 p.m. Moscow time. The terror act killed 14 persons and injured more than 100 persons, and the total capacity of the bombs, which were activated in Makhachkala, reached, according to estimates of different agencies, 70-150 kg of TNT equivalent. According to investigators, the terror act was committed by Rizvan and Muslimat Aliev, and they were involved in the activities of the extremist underground by Aminat Kurbanova, their neighbour.

On March 6, in Dagestan, in the village of Karabudakhkent, a female suicide bomber committed a suicide bombing at a police check point. The explosion killed five policemen, and two more policemen were seriously injured. The investigators revealed that the female suicide bomber was Aminat Ibragimova, the spouse of Zaur Zagirov, the leader of the Caspian grouping of militants, who was killed in Dagestan in February during a special operation while he rendered armed resistance to law enforcement agents.

2011

On December 19, in Gubden village of Dagestan a car carrying allegedly suicide bomber exploded. There were no casualties among law enforcers.  

On August 30, in Grozny a supposed suicide bomber blew him up at a detention attempt. Later another explosion happened. It was triggered when law enforcers and occasional passers-by gathered at the place of the first incident. The blasts killed nine people and wounded 22.

On May 10,  in central Makhachkala the young man triggered the explosive device, which was attached to his body, when policemen asked him to show his documents. The blast killed the suicide bomber and one policeman. Another law enforcer and several civilians who happened to be in the vicinity were injured and taken to hospital.

On April 25, in Zavodsky Disctrict of Grozny (Chechnya) two militants were surrounded in the apartment house by law enforcers. After militants dried up their ammunition supplies they blown themselves up.

On April 10, an explosion occurred in Kizlyar (Dagestan). At the site of explosion body of an alleged suicide bomber was found, as well as suicide belt. There were no other casualties.

On March 4, law enforcers of Nazran in Ingushetia tried to detain local resident, but he offered resistance and blown himself up. There were no casualties among law enforcers as a result of the explosion.

On February 15, two suicide bombers blew themselves up in Grozny at an attempt to detain them in a city private house. For the time of the special operation inhabitants of the house were evacuated, and none of them suffered. During the inspection of the dead bodies belts stuffed with explosives were found.

On February 14, near the village police station in the village of Gubden of the Karabudakhkent District, a suicide bomber activated a bomb. The second explosion in the same village occurred at about 10:35 p.m. Moscow time near a militia check point. According to the Republic's MIA, the bomb was also activated by a suicide bomber. As a result of two explosions in the village, two persons were killed and 27 persons were injured. According to investigators, on February 14, a terror act in the village of Gubden was committed by Vitaly Razdobudko, a resident of the city of Pyatigorsk, and his wife Maria Khorosheva.

On January 24, terror act was committed at Moscow Domodedovo airport. 37 people were killed, dozens wounded. Chechen islamist leader Doku Umarov claimed he was mastermind behind Domodedovo bombing.

2010

On October 19, three suicide bombers managed to get to the territory adjacent to the building of the Chechen Parliament. Three people were killed and 17 more were wounded.

In the course of a special operation conducted on September 24 in Makhachkala (Dagestan), a suicide bomber triggered his bomb, causing wounds to 26 people – 13 militiamen and 13 civilians.

On September 24, near the building of a private security firm in the city of Nartkala (Kabardino-Balkaria), an explosion occurred; the body of an alleged terrorist was found nearby. None of militiamen was hurt.

On September 9, a suicide bomber triggered a powerful homemade bomb at the entrance to the central marketplace of Vladikavkaz. Apart from the suicide bomber, 19 people were lost. The total number of victims made more than 160 people.

On September 5, a car stuffed with explosives and driven by a suicide bomber went off in the territory of the testing range "Dalniy" in Dagestan, where a soldiers' tent camp was set up. Four people were killed and 35 more were wounded.

On August 29, during an attack on Tsentoroi, the native village of Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov, seven members of the armed underground triggered radio-controlled explosive devices attached to their bodies, killing six militiamen and wounding 18 other law enforcers and seven local residents.

A suicide bombing occurred on August 21 in Grozny (Chechnya). It was committed by Khamzat Shemilev, who, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), in the hierarchy of militants held the post of Emir of Grozny.

On August 17, in the Prigorodny District of North Ossetia, at the militia checkpoint, a suicide bomber triggered his explosive device. The blast killed a militiaman and severely wounded three inspectors of the road-and-patrol (DPS) service.

On June 30, a suicide bomber triggered an explosion in central Grozny (Chechnya), killing one person and wounding seven others.

On April 29, a suicide bomber in a car made a self-explosion near a militia checkpoint in the Kazbek District of Dagestan. As a result, two militiamen were killed; and the number of victims reached 17 persons.

On April 9,  a female suicide bomber approached a police cordon on the outskirts of the village of Ekazhevo of the Nazran District of Ingushetia. In response, policemen opened fire on her, and then an explosive device, attached to her body, detonated.

On April 5, a suicide bomber blew himself up near the GOVD (City Interior Division) of Karabulak (Ingushetia). Two militiamen were killed and two others were wounded. The suicide bomber blew himself up after militiamen at the entrance to the GOVD asked for his documents.

On March 31, in Kizlyar (Dagestan), a double suicide bombing occurred, killing 12 and wounding 27 persons.

On March 29,  in Moscow, at once two explosions were committed at metro stations. The first explosion occurred at 07:56 a.m. Moscow time at metro station "Lubyanka". The second explosion was committed at 08:40 a.m. Moscow time at metro station "Park Kultury". According to the FSB, those terror acts were committed by female suicide bombers. As a result of two explosions in the Moscow metro, 40 persons were killed and more than 100 persons were injured. The explosion at the metro station "Lubyanka" was committed by Maryam Sharipova, a native of Dagestan, the wife of Magomedal iVagabov, one of the leaders of Dagestan militants. Another female suicide bomber, who blew herself up at the metro station "Park Kultury", was identified as a 17-year-old DjennetAbdurakhmanova, the widow of UmalatMagomedov, the leader of Dagestani militants, who was killed in late December 2009. DokkuUmarov, the leader of North-Caucasian militants, undertook a responsibility for those terror acts. According to him, that was a revenge for military operations in Chechnya.

On January 6, in Makhachkala (Dagestan), a Niva car driven by a suicide bomber exploded at the gate of the DPS base. The blast killed five and wounded 19 militiamen. 

2009

On October 21, in the Oktiabrskiy District of Grozny, a 17-year-old suicide bomber Zaurbek Khashumov blew himself up, when he was stopped by militia patrol for a check. Four policemen and a local resident were wounded.

On September 16, an explosion occurred in Mir Street near the Fashion House in the Zavodskoi District of Grozny. The explosion, committed by a female suicide bomber, injured six local residents and two police officers. There were no casualties due to the fact that militiamen noticed the woman and managed to react in due time.

On September 12, as a result of suicide bombing in downtown Grozny three militiamen were wounded.

On September 11, in Nazran (Ingushetia), on the Federal Highway "Kavkaz", a Lada Priora car was blown up. The suicide bomber crashed into a DPS post and triggered his explosive device. The number of victims was 8 people.

On September 1, in Makhachkala (Dagestan), a suicide bomber blew himself up at the Severny (North) GIBDD (traffic police) post, killing one and wounding 11 persons.

At night on August 28, in the town of Shali, two terrorists triggered their "shahid belts", wounding three policemen and three civilians.

In the morning on August 25, in the village of Mesker-Yurt, Shali District of Chechnya, four militiamen were killed and one was wounded in the terror act, committed by a suicide bomber. The blast also killed two civilians.

On August 21, two suicide bombers triggered their explosive devices in Chechnya. The explosion in Pervomaiskaya Street Day hurt two civilians, including a 13-year-old girl. The blast in Mayakovsky Street killed three law enforcers.

On August 17, in Nazran (Ingushetia), a terrorist rammed the gate of the GOVD with a Gazel van stuffed with explosives; he entered the yard and triggered a powerful explosive device, killing 25 people and wounding 262 others.

On July 26, in Grozny, a terror act was committed by a suicide bomber before the theatrical-concert hall, killing five people.

In the morning on June 22, en route of the motorcade of President of Ingushetia Yunus-Bek Evkurov, on the Federal Highway "Kavkaz", a mined car blew up. It was triggered by a suicide bomber. The president and his brother Uvais Evkurov were seriously wounded; and a security guard and the driver were killed.

On May 15, a suicide bomber blew himself up in front of the Chechen MIA in Grozny. Two militiamen were killed and five others persons, including three militiamen, were wounded.

2008

On November 6, in Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia, near the central market, at the intersection of Vatutin and Kuibyshev Streets, a fixed-route taxi was blown up. An explosive device was actuated by a female suicide bomber. As a result of the terror act, 12 persons were killed and more than 30 persons got injuries of varying severity.

On October 18, in Merezhkov Street in the village of Kantyshevo, Nazran District of Ingushetia, a Lada car blew up near the school; the driver-suicide bomber was killed.

On September 30, in Nazran, in Kartoev Street, an attempt was undertaken on the head of the Ingush MIA Musa Medov – the suicide bomber perished and four people were wounded.The minister and his bodyguards did not suffer.

In the evening on August 29, in the district centre of Vedeno in Chechnya, two unidentified men used a UAZ van to break through the fence of the Battalion "South" dislocation; then, they blew their van up in the territory of the base. As a result, one special agent was killed and ten others wounded.

In the morning on August 11, in Kadyrov Street in Shali (Chechnya), a local was killed by an IED (improvised explosive device). Investigators concluded that the landmine was attached to the body of the bomber.

2007

On October 23, on the border of the Kazbek and Khasavyurt District of Dagestan, a female suicide bomber blew herself up in a fixed-route taxi, which went from Khasavyurt to the village of Dylym. The explosion occurred near a stationary road-and-patrol service of the Kazbek District Police Department, near the village of Lenin-aul. As a result, the female suicide bomber died. 8 persons got injuries of varying severity.

2005

On December 29, in Irchi-Kozak Street, near the main mosque of Makhachkala (Dagestan), a powerful explosion occurred. The alleged suicide bomber was lost; and an occasional passerby was slightly wounded.

2004

In the morning on September 1, a group of terrorist of 32 persons, including two female suicide bombers, took hostages in School No. 1 in the city of Beslan (North Ossetia). For two and a half days, the terrorists held more than 1100 hostages in the school building, mostly children, their parents and the school staff. On September 3, an operation to free the hostages was undertaken. As a result of the hostage-taking operation and a spontaneous rescue undertaking, 334 people and all the terrorists perished, including two female suicide bombers; only one militant survived.

On August 31, in Moscow a female suicide bomber blew herself up near the metro station "Riga". 11 persons were killed, and more than 50 persons were injured. According to investigators, the explosion also killed Nikolai Kipkeev, a direct organizer of the terror act, a native of Karachay-Cherkessia.

On August 24, two TU-154 aircrafts "Moscow-Sochi" and TU-134 "Moscow-Volgograd", which took off from the "Domodedovo" Moscow Airport, were exploded in the air. In both cases, female suicide bombers managed to enter the aircrafts. 89 persons all passengers and crews of both aircrafts were killed. The female suicide bombers were Aminat Nagaeva and Satsita Djebirkhanova, natives of Chechnya. According to investigators, the crime was organized by Shamil Basaev.

On April 6, on the highway Nazran-Magas, an attempt was committed on President of Ingushetia Murat Zyazikov – when the presidential motorcade was passing by, a VAZ-2107 car, which was driven by a suicide bomber, went off. President Zyazikov was slightly wounded; and six more people were wounded – four bodyguards and two local residents. Shamil Basaev claimed responsibility for the attempt.

On February 6, in Moscow, in the metro section between the stations "Paveletskaya" and "Avtozavodskaya", a suicide bomber triggered his explosive device. 41 people were killed and over 250 wounded.

2003

On December 9, in Moscow, near the Kremlin and the building of the State Duma, a female suicide bomber blew herself up near the "National" Hotel. 6 persons were killed, and other 14 persons were injured. According to investigators, the female suicide bomber was Khedizhi Mangerieva, a native of the Chechen village of Kurchaloi.

On December 5, an explosion occurred in the electric train "Kislovodsk-Mineralnye Vody". According to the investigation, it was committed by a suicide bomber. As a result, 47 people were killed; and 186 passengers of the electric train were wounded.

On September 15, in the Ingush capital of Magas, a GAZ-53 truck, loaded with explosives, broke through the fence, drove up to the building of the Ingush FSB Department, and blew up. Five people were killed and 29 others wounded.

On August 1, in Mozdok, a suicide bomber Magomed Dadaev, driving a KamAZ truck, got into the territory of the Mozdok Military Hospital and triggered an explosive device near the main medical building, killing 52 people and wounding 78.

On July 5, in Moscow, in Tushino, two female suicide bombers blew themselves up during the festival "Krylya" (Wings). 16 persons were killed and more than 50 persons were injured. The female suicide bombers were Zulikhan Elihadjieva and Maryam Sharipova.

On June 20, in Grozny, a woman and a man blew a KamAZ vehicle with explosives in front of the Operational and Investigatory Bureau of the MIA. 36 persons were injured. The explosion killed only terrorists.

On June 5, in the town of Mozdok in North Ossetia, a female suicide bomber attacked a bus with helicopter pilots and technical staff of the Russian air base. There were about 40 persons in the bus, and the terror act killed 16 persons and injured other 15 persons.

On May 14, near the village of Iliskhan-Yurt of the Gudermes District of Chechnya, during the religious holiday, attended by a large number of people, a female suicide bomber blew herself and 20 persons up, and other 140 persons were injured.

On May 12, in the village of Znamenskoe of the Nadterechny District of Chechnya, three suicide bombers, including two women, committed a terror act not far from the buildings of the administration of the Nadterechny District and the Department of the Russian FSB. A truck, packed with explosives, driven by a suicide bomber, was blown up in front of the building of the MIA and the FSB, primarily residential houses were destroyed. 59 persons were killed. More than 300 persons were injured.

2002

On December 27,  in Grozny, two trucks, packed with bombs, broke the cordon of the Chechen Government House in a specially protected zone and exploded in its territory. The vehicles, which bore more than a ton of explosives, were driven by suicide bombers, including a 15-year-old girl. The suicide bombers were members of a Chechen family: a 43-year-old father drove a KamAZ", his daughter sat next to him, and a 17-year-old son drove an UAZ car. The explosion crater was about seven meters in diameter. 72 persons were killed and other 210 persons got injuries of varying severity.

On October 23,  a group of suicide bombers, led by Movsar Baraev, seized the theatre on Dubrovka in Moscow. At that time, the theatre demonstrated the musical "Nord-Ost". More than 1000 persons became hostages. Three days later, on October 26, the building was seized by storm. More than 130 hostages were killed, the other hostages were released. All terrorists were killed, including 19 female suicide bombers.

On February 5, a 16-year old Zarema Inarkaeva carried the explosives to the building of the Zavodskoi ROVD (District Interior Division) in Grozny. The explosion injured only the female suicide bomber herself.

2001

On November 29,  in Chechnya, a female suicide bomber with a "shakhid belt" blew herself up together with Geidar Gadjiev, Commandant of Urus-Martan.

On April 9, in the restroom of the building of the Government House in Grozny, an explosion killed a cleaning woman, and two women were injured. The perished woman was a suicide bomber.

2000

On July 2, in Argun (Chechnya), an Ural truck stuffed with explosives and driven by a suicide bomber broke into a temporary location of the Argun OVD (Interior Division), crashed into the hostel and blew up. As a result, 26 militiamen and prosecutors were killed and 81 others wounded.

On June 6, in Russia, the first suicide bombing, committed by a female suicide bomber, was registered. It was committed by Khava Baraeva, a niece of Arbi Baraev, who managed to approach the commandant's office building in Alkhan Yurt in Chechnya with a truck, packed with TNT. The guards shot to the truck, and, as a result, the explosion occurred. Apart from Khava Baraeva, the explosion killed two OMON (riot police) fighters.

  • Kadyrov reports on thousands sent to frontline

    Since the start of the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine, over 51,000 fighters have been sent from Chechnya, including 20,400 volunteers. About 10,000 fighters from Chechnya are in the combat zone, Ramzan Kadyrov has reported on the departure of a new group from the Grozny Airport.
