Irganai villagers do not let their children to school, demanding to meet Dagestani leadership

On September 1 and 2, school lessons were disrupted in the village of Irganai, Untsukul District of Dagestan. Parents would not let their children to school, demanding a meeting with the republic's leadership to discuss the situation with non-payment of compensations for flooded land.

The Irganai HPP is the second in power in Northern Caucasus. Its construction began in 1980s and ended in 2008; after its commissioning, gardens of local residents with the harvest, their houses and farmland occurred under water. Residents of flooded villages held repeated actions claiming due compensations.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 1 the assembly of Irganai villagers decided not to send children to school until the head of Dagestan Ramazan Abdulatipov met the village representatives.

"Administration officials promised to organize the meeting within a month. People answered that if the leader was so busy, they were ready to meet the Prime Minister and tell him about the real situation with payment of compensations. Until the meeting takes place, they won't send their children to school," said the source.

According to his story, on September 1, no more than 20 pupils out of 300 came to school.

The information was confirmed by the district education department and at the school: according to the principal Khaibula Magomedov, onSeptember 2, the attendance was 90 pupils.
