Sochi court finds builder Demerchyan guilty of false denunciation

The Adler District Court of Sochi has handed down a guilty verdict to the builder Mardiros Demerchyan and appointed a punishment of 300 hours of mandatory public work.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Mardiros Demerchyan, a builder of the objects of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, was accused of false denunciation against policemen. The state prosecution demanded 300 hours of public work for Demerchyan, while the defendant refused to plead guilty of false denunciation.

Demerchyan and his advocates intend to appeal against the verdict, including to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

Demerchyan was detained by the police on June 12, 2013, and on the following day he was brought to hospital from the police station. Demerchyan said that policemen beat up and tortured him.
