Two years after Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev's murder: public interest does not cease

Today marks two years since the murder in Dagestan of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev, a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. In Dagestan, the investigation into the murder is not successful, and the criminal case has a chance for the qualified investigation only if it is transferred to the federal level. This opinion has been expressed by advocate Abdurashid Sheikhov. The request for the federal investigation into the murder of the journalist is also supported by members of the civil society, since the case does not cease to be of public interest.

Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev was killed on July 9, 2013, in the outskirt of Makhachkala. He became the 17th journalist killed in Dagestan in the last 20 years and the second employee of the "Caucasian Knot" killed during performance of his professional duties. On July 30, Russia’s investigators have suspended the preliminary investigation into the murder of journalist. In the end of September the decision to suspend the investigation was cancelled by the Kirov District Prosecutor's Office of Makhachkala.

According to advocate Abdurashid Sheikhov, from the very start of the investigation into the criminal case, no proper qualified operational support has been provided. The advocate has added that the investigation has been and is conducted "without sufficient intensity and qualification."

Abdurashid Sheikhov doubts that the resonant murder will ever be solved.

Human rights organizations insist that after two years of unsuccessful investigation, the case of the murder of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, should be transferred to the federal level. This was stated by authors of the appeal signed by 28 human rights organizations, including "Article 19", "Human Rights House Foundation", "Index on Censorship", "PEN International", and "Reporters without Borders" (RWB).
