Georgian opposition has no resources for mass protest actions, political analysts assert

In Georgia, the situation is tense; however, it is not too tense for the start of riots. This opinion was expressed by the Georgian political analysts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot". They believe that the Georgian government and opposition have no resources for the increase of the tension.

The situation in the country cannot be treated as unstable. This was stated by Tornike Sharashenidze, an expert of the International Centre for Geopolitical Studies.

According to him, the population of Georgia does trust neither the current authorities represented by the ruling coalition "Georgian Dream", nor the previous power represented by the "United National Movement" (UNM) Party.

Tornike Sharashenidze believes that both parties – the authorities and the opposition – have low ratings and no resources for the increase of the tension. According to the expert, the UNM can lead people to protest actions only through the use of the situation around the "Rustavi 2" TV Channel.

Political analyst Zaal Andjaparidze agrees that the tension in Georgia results from the trial around the "Rustavi 2" TV Channel.

According to him, at present, the governmental bodies "are strong and motivated;" however, the opposition's chances for success "not only in the streets" will increase in the case of the consolidation of the oppositional forces.

"Everything depends on their actions: what guarantees they provide and whether they will be supported from abroad. The practice shows that all the colour revolutions in the former Soviet Union republics were carried out with the support of the West," Zaal Andjaparidze has told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
