Lithuanian SC finally finds Egle Kusaite not guilty of plotting terror act in Chechnya

The Lithuanian Supreme Court (SC) has dismissed the appeal filed by the Prosecutor's Office and upheld the acquittal of Egle Kusaite, a resident of Klaipeda, accused of the intention to commit a terror act in Chechnya.

In October 2009, Egle Kusaite was detained at the Kaunas bus station with a Russian visa in her Lithuanian passport. According to the Lithuanian law enforcement bodies, the young woman has confessed to her intention to commit a terror act in Chechnya. According to the prosecutors, Egle Kusaite was recruited by her Chechen acquaintances. Later, the woman has retracted her confession and explained that by the fact that her confession was made under torture.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 30, 2013, the Vilnius Regional Court sentenced Egle Kusaite to 10 months of imprisonment. However, the Court has taken into account the period already spent by the defendant in custody and pronounced the decision that the young woman had already served the punishment. On April 4, 2014, the Lithuanian Court of Appeal acquitted the resident of Klaipeda.

Supporters of Egle Kusaite believe that Russia FSB agents played their roles in the criminal prosecution of the Lithuanian citizen. Besides, Egle Kusaite has also claimed that she fell victim to a provocation prepared by the State Security Department of Lithuania, the "DELFI" reports.
